Kollektives Erinnern (engl. Subtitles)

Twenty-two people who were active in the Tanzfabrik collective or its surrounding community during the years of the Tanzfabrik’s founding or afterward have spoken about their (artistic) careers and described their connections and involvement with the Tanzfabrik Berlin.

My aim is to highlight the diverse paths of artistic development, identify influences, and thereby fill a gap in the history of the emergence of contemporary dance in Berlin. The project “Kollektives Erinnern / Collective Memory” is a starting point and presents excerpts from the conversations. The selection of participants was based on personal contact, availability, and my capacity to conduct the interviews. The list of those who wish to be interviewed—or who should be interviewed—was (and is) much longer. The personal memories of individuals weave together into a network that can serve as the starting point for a contemporary historiography. An understanding of the relevance of oral history, as well as an understanding of how memory works, reinforces my conviction that the stories of individuals must be heard in order to make history tangible.
